Altar | Ofrenda

Dia de los Muertos Altars, or "Ofrendas," are a beautiful and essential part of the Dia de los Muertos tradition. These altars are dedicated to remembering and honoring deceased friends and family members, playing a crucial role in the celebration by guiding the spirits back to the land of the living on the Noche de Muertos, the night of November 2nd.

What is an Altar (Ofrenda)?

An Ofrenda is a carefully constructed altar filled with offerings that welcome the spirits of loved ones back to the world of the living. These altars are rich with symbolism and typically include the following elements:

  • Photographs: Pictures of the deceased, reminding us of those we honor.
  • Marigolds (Cempasúchil): These bright orange flowers are believed to attract the spirits with their vibrant color and scent.
  • Candles: Lighted candles guide the spirits to the altar, illuminating their way back home.
  • Incense (Copal): The aromatic smoke purifies the area and attracts spirits.
  • Pan de Muerto: A traditional sweet bread specifically made for Dia de los Muertos.
  • Favorite Foods and Drinks: Placing the favorite foods and beverages of the deceased on the altar nourishes the spirits after their long journey.
  • Sugar Skulls (Calaveras): These decorative skulls symbolize death and the sweetness of life.
  • Personal Mementos: Items that were significant to the deceased, such as toys, instruments, or clothing.

Purpose and Symbolism

The purpose of the Ofrenda is to welcome back the spirits with offerings that include their favorite things, creating a space where their presence is honored and remembered. Each item on the altar has deep cultural and spiritual significance, creating a powerful connection between the living and the dead.
